Premium Leather Balm with ingredients which preserve and soften all horse gear, riding boots and gloves with NZ Beeswax, Olive Oil, and Eucalyptus oil.

Fantastic for rejuvenating old, dry leather, scuffed boots, leather gloves and seriously effective on the new aniline or calfskin leathers that many new saddlery items are made of.

The oil content in this creamy balm provides nourishment for your leather, as only natural, pure ingredients can.

Beeswax to protect the leather and stitching from sweat and water, gives good grip with the added advantage that gloves and reins do not become slippery in the wet.

The Eucalyptus oil has antibacterial and antibicrobial properties which help to prevent mould and mildew occurring, its also great as a repellent for insects and rodents!

Used regularly, this balm actually makes it easier to clean your leather next time. That’s right - it gets easier. How it works is it prevents the greasy build up on reins and saddle flaps from adhering to the leather quite as much. How do you get that to work? Follow our advice below on how to clean and care for your leather.

Cleaning and Caring for your Leather goods

For all leather – the first thing is that it needs to be CLEAN and DRY before you apply the dressing. I use a soft brush to brush off the dust first, especially the stitched seams on boots and saddlery. You can use a soft boot cleaning brush (you can get these from the supermarket), or you can use a horses face brush, or a really soft toothbrush. As long as the bristles get into the seams and joins and soft enough not to scratch the leather.

Now, before we go any further, a word about saddle soap. Saddle soap isn’t really a soap. It doesn’t really clean your leather at all, it actually encourages build up of grease and sweat and dirt, it sticky, and its VERY slippery in the wet.

The best way to clean your leather is just plain old water.

Yep – warm water. That’s it!

Simple, effective and cheap. Plus some ‘elbow grease’, (for the uninitiated that means a little bit of hard work). If the leather I’m cleaning is really dirty, I’ll add a small amount of dish wash to the water for a bit of help - but beware – this will dry out the leather a little.

For a build up of grease, you can lay the wet cloth over the leather and just wait for the water to soften the grease. Then you can wipe it off without scrubbing. For really stubborn marks or grease spots that have adhered to the leather, you can easily remove these with some of our leather cleaning fluid on your cloth, really helpful if you have those nasty little ‘jockeys’ on your saddle flaps.

It’s best not to get the leather too wet. Dip your cloth into the water and wring it out as much as you can. Don’t use a sponge, it holds too much water and you can’t ‘scrub’ with it. I like to use those old fashioned cotton stringy type dish cloths They last for ages, they are a wee bit rough and get the grease off the leather best. You can see these in our Leather Cleaning Kit, which comes with a tin of Leather cream, the cleaning fluid and two cloths.

Once you have your item clean, hang it up to dry, NOT in the sun.

When its dried off, you can apply the Leather Balm. Use a lint free cloth, (like theone supplied in the kit)

Now, if your leather is fairly dry, apply liberally and leave it overnight if possible to soak in, then wipe off any excess and buff. Make sure you apply it into the seams, it will help protect the stitching from dirt and rot.

If you have Aniline leather or calfskin, apply sparingly but thoroughly. Its very rewarding on these leathers and restores the magic grip that these leathers have.

Gloves:
If you are cleaning gloves – its easy! Put them on your hands – now go wash your ‘hands’ as normal, with a little soap, and dry off with a towel. Hang up to dry. Once dry, put them on again. Don’t be disappointed if they feel stiff as a board – that wont last long! Put some of your now favorite Leather balm on and rub it
in thoroughly like hand cream. That’s it. Your gloves will instantly get soft as you work it in by rubbing your hands together. Don’t forget to get all sides of the fingers, Pat off any excess with a towel and you’re good to go!

Now, if you did a great job of ensuring your leather was really clean before you applied the balm to saddlery items, next time it will be much easier to wipe off the grease with water and a cloth because it wasn’t able to adhere to the flesh of the leather due to the protective duties of the beeswax. And that’s the beauty of this cream.

Top Tip:

If you keep a cloth for the dressing, I ‘load it up’ with the dressing, when done I scrunch it up and pop it in a bag ready to use next time. You will use a lot less dressing this way instead of loading up a new cloth each time.
